Reiki for Kids - An Effective Form of Natural Therapy

Updated: Nov 14

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a very old Japanese energy healing technique that is very gentle and can be used as a complementary form of therapy to any other protocol or treatment. It stands for spiritually guided light force energy and utilizes the practitioner as a conduit of this universal energy into the body of the client. It is non-invasive, very intuitive and individually tailored to the energy and needs of each client.

Reiki works to balance the life force energy we have in our bodies, leading us to a state of balanced health. It is based on the idea that this life force energy, or ki, is responsible for an individual’s current level of health and well-being. When your “ki” is low, you feel unwell or unbalanced on one or all levels (mental, physical, emotional and/or spiritual). When a person’s “ki” is high, they are at their optimal state of health and feel an overall sense of balance.

A Reiki session can be hands-on or off, depending on the comfort of the child/parent. Children benefit greatly from Reiki as they are very sensitive to energy and are much more receptive to it than adults. They have also spent less of their life in a state of imbalance or exposed to stress or toxins. Due to this they will generally require shorter sessions for the same benefits or even greater.

Because Reiki can assist in bringing a person’s body back into balance, it can create a greater state of peace and relaxation within the mind and body.

Generally, Reiki for kids can bring a number of benefits:

  • Promotes a sense of inner peace, leading to calmness

  • Helps with self-regulation and reduces hyperactivity

  • Reduces states of anxiety, fears/phobias, and stress

  • Provides support during difficult life events

  • Improves sleep quality

  • Improves self-awareness and self-esteem

  • Reduces irritability, anger and other challenging emotions

  • Promotes healing and supports pain relief

What to Expect from a Healing Session?

Your child will be asked to lie down on a designated massage table. Once they have relaxed and feel comfortable, the practitioner will begin the body scan with their hands hovered about 6 inches above the child. At this point the practitioner is checking for any energy blockages or imbalances. Once the check has been done, the practitioner will utilize a number of hand positions to work on balancing ki in your child’s body.

During the session, your child may experience a variety of feelings and sensations. These may include:

-heat, cold, tingling, and twitching in  parts of the body, or a rumbling belly

-A feeling of deep relaxation, ease or sleepiness (they may even fall asleep)

-A feeling of calm and inner balance

-A feeling of “aliveness”

Post-session, your child may feel sleepy, yawn a lot, and feel that they need extra time to rest. This is normal as we have just moved and released a lot of energy. Allow them this time to rest and ensure that they are drinking plenty of water before and after the session.

Although even one session will do wonders for your child, it is usually recommended to receive Reiki more consistently, especially if working on a particular health challenge or goal. I often recommend 4 sessions to begin, with each spaced one week apart, as this is when individuals begin to see the most improvement.

Reiki is a wonderful, natural treatment that works with each child’s body to meet their specific needs, whether they are physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. It is a gentle, non-invasive form of energy work that works to bring the body back into balance and promote an optimal state of health and well-being.
